The proscribed Islamic Movement has thanked human rights lawyer, Femi Falana and other people of conscience that made it possible for their leader Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat to depart for India for medical treatment.
In a statement signed by Abdurrahman Abubakar Yola, Chairman, Free Zakzaky Campaign Committee said:“We wish to use this opportunity to thank all people of conscience, particularly the team of lawyers being led by Femi Falana SAN, some very senior citizens,
diplomats, human rights activists and organizations, journalists and the general public who doggedly stood by us in the campaign for justice for the victims of Zaria genocide. Thank you and God bless.”
“In spite of the attempted efforts at frustrating this emergency medical journey by the Kaduna state government, which tried to unilaterally put conditions to the journey even though it lacked such powers, the journey has gone on without much hitches”, IMN said.
“This emergency medical journey is consequent on the facts that both the Sheikh and his wife are known to be clearly very ill in detention, sequel to the brutal wounds unjustifiably inflicted on them by the state agents in the name of Nigerian army, the resultant prolonged dehumanizing detention in the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the obvious poisoning of the Sheikh.
As a result of all these physical and psychological stresses, the Sheikh suffered a series of mild strokes and is at the risk of further recurrences. “At the same time, he lost one eye following the military attack and is at a severe risk of losing sight completely in the other.
He is now found to have more than twenty times the toxic levels of lead poison in his body! Similarly, the wife has been under excruciating pains with shrapnel deeply lodged in her body for all these years of inhuman conditions in detention. She now is able to ambulate only with the use of a wheelchair, even to the airport.
They have been battling ailments that could not be treated in Nigeria, as posited by the foreign medical experts that earlier in the year assessed their health condition. Undoubtedly, both risk losing their lives had the medical journey been further delayed or denied”
UK And DSS Petitioned To Probe Buhari’s Cambridge Documents
The Department of State Services and the London Metropolitan Police Service have been petitioned to investigate the documents said to have been obtained from Cambridge University and presented by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential election petition tribunal.
Abba Kyari, the president’s chief of staff, had told the tribunal that he obtained the President’s ‘assessment’ documents from Cambridge University.
He was quoted as saying he personally signed for and collected the documents on behalf of the President.
The UK-based examination body oversaw the conduct of final year secondary school examination in Nigeria and placement into foreign universities in the 1960s.
In the two petitions forwarded by Agu, the lawyer questioned the authenticity of the ‘certifying statement’ said to have been obtained from the Cambridge Assessment International Education.
He asked the UK police and the DSS to launch an investigation into the circumstances leading to the procurement.
DSS Arrests El-Zakzaky And Wife On Return To Nigeria
Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shitte, Ibrahim El-ZakZaky and his wife, Zeenat were on Friday arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) upon their arrival to Nigeria.
El-Zakzaky and wife arrived in Nigeria through an Ethiopian Airlines by exactly 12noon at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.
Ibrahim Musa, IMN spokesperson confirmed that the Shiites leader was taken away by the DSS operatives.
El-Zakzaky had rejected medical treatment in India, claiming the Nigerian government frustrated efforts to get his preferred doctors to attend to him and Zeenat.
“All what we have seen here, have shown us that there is no trust, they just brought us here for another detention,”
El-Zakzaky said while in India.
Nigerian Government, however, denied El-Zakzaky’s claims.
The permanent secretary at Nigeria’s information and culture ministry Grace Gekpe, in a statement on Wednesday, described the allegations as “foul cry”.
She accused the Shiites leader of seeking medical treatment abroad for “ulterior motives against laid down procedures”.
She said that the claim by the IMN leader that he was held in circumstances worse than he was in Nigeria should be disregarded.
Gekpe said he had
“Requested that his passport be handed over to him” and also “refused to subject himself to preliminary medical checks.”
The Shiites leader and his wife Zeenat left Nigeria for India on Monday for medical check-up aboard Emirate flight EK786 at about 6:45 pm en route Dubai to Mumbai, India.
Barely 24-hours of arriving India for medical treatment, El-Zakzaky Thursday said he did not trust the doctors assign to treat him in India.
El-Zakzaky said his supposed medical trip has been worse than times he had been in prison detention.
The Shiites leader said he and Zeenat cannot
“Allow a stranger to treat us, lest not what couldn’t be done with bullets be carried out in a different way.”
El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in the detention of the Nigeria government since 2015.
He faces an eight-count of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.

Nigerian Universities To Be Shut Down From Monday As Workers Begin Strike Action
Nigerian university workers under the aegis of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, under the auspices of the Joint Action Congress(JAC), have vowed to commence a one week warning strike as from Monday the 19th of August 2019.
According to a letter signed by the chairman of JAC, Samson Ugwoke and issued on Friday, said the warning strike was aimed at pushing the Federal Government to meet their demands.
According to the unions, the contending issues include payment of earned allowances, University Staff Schools matter, renegotiation of 2019 FGN/Unions agreement among others.
“At the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum, Sunday 18 August 2019, without a positive response from the Federal Government of Nigeria, members shall proceed on a 5-day warning strike in all Branches from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd August 2019.
“You are, therefore, directed to properly mobilize our members for this action. All defaulting branches shall be sanctioned accordingly. Please be guided,” the letter reads.
The Non-Academic staff Union of Universities had earlier planned for a nationwide protest on July 15 ahead of an indefinite strike over the failure of the federal government to implement its agreements with them.
Meanwhile, Joint Action Congress(JAC), University of Jos branch, had given the Federal Government a two-day ultimatum within which to meet their demands or face a five-day warning strike.
Mrs Esther Ezeama, the chairperson of the union, gave the ultimatum during a news conference on Thursday in Jos.
