Nobel Laurette Professor Wole Soyinka, has said that he would not keep silent whenever injustice is done to any powerless or vulnerable Nigerian by the people at the helms of affairs of the country.

While speaking In an interview with Premium Times, the prof said he feels himself reduced

whenever some horrendous violation is being done to another human being, especially the downtrodden.

“If I step out of my house and there is some horrendous violation being done to another human being, I feel myself reduced, and for the rest of the day, maybe the rest of the week, I’m not really whole. It preys on my mind. In other words, there are other things that I would rather be doing than going out on a limb to bat.

“If you live in a society like this where you feel, sometimes, that you are completely alienated from the rest of society, where society itself doesn’t seem to share, in the main, same principles, where very often, in fact, you find the very people you’re trying to defend turning on you because they prefer to take the side of power. They feel more comfortable under tyrannical forces because they perhaps feel that, if they just endure such tyrannical forces, they might go away in the end.”

Speaking on the Nigerian youth, Soyinka frowned at the treachery of the so-called young generation saying many of them are only just waiting for their own slice of the national cake, stressing that they admit it, they co-opt others and even ridicule the progressive ones among them.

“The first thing is that I have never given a blanket endorsement of youth. I used to exchange friendly disagreements with Tai Solarin from time to time over this. I remember I took him on once when he said, I can die for the young generation, and I said, don’t say that. Don’t be so sweeping in your statement, some of this young generation is treacherous and many of them are only just waiting for their own slice of the national cake.

“But something has been happening to our youth. It’s probably the technological strides in communication and dissemination of information. Far too many of them, empty-headed, really think that they know. They are what I sometimes refer to as the generation of be–the- first- to- comment. It’s like they are sitting down there, they don’t understand the issue somebody has just posited, either as a blog or whatever you people call it, I don’t know– I don’t live in that virtual realm,” he added.

He said some Nigerian youth lack intelligent curiosity, adding that they want things quick and easy and that they ridicule those who take the trouble to set a standard.

“They strike me as capable of betraying a serious, genuine cause and endangering themselves–-which is okay–-but to endanger the overall movement is unacceptable. They want everything quick and easy, and they want knowledge as pre-digested mush.

“Anything that requires even figuratively chewing over an idea, a moment, an occurrence, they resent it, they ridicule those who take the trouble to set a standard-– it’s too much labour for them to aspire to a higher level. I become sickened, in the main, by this so-called new generation,” he said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said it will begin manhunt with immediate effect for the home-based Nigerians indicted by the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a variety of scams and online fraud cases in the US.

According to DAILY POST report the fraudsters, majority based in Nigeria, were involved in a series of coordinated internet scam running into billions of dollars fraudulently obtained from victims in the United States and other parts of the world.

He said this while speaking at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Friday, the Acting Chairman of the agency, Ibrahim Magu, stated that the agency had commenced investigation into the matter.

He said the commission was investigating to ascertain the involvement of Nigerians who collaborated with the ones indicted in the United States.

“We will investigate it and we will leave no stone unturned. We will go after those who collaborated with the ones in the US and they will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” Magu said.

He also restated an earlier position of government that it would go after those involved in the failed Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) gas to power project that plunged the country into a $9.9 billion judgement debt crisis.

The EFCC boss said the commission was collaborating with the FBI in two operations notably Operation ‘Wire-wire’ which commenced in 2018 and Operation ‘Rewire’ presently ongoing, both aimed at containing cybercrime.

He said the joint operation involved Malaysia, Canada, Indonesia and the United States.

“We work with FBI in Lagos. We carried out operation wire-wire and the FBI mentioned in their press statement that we are one of the agencies working with them and it was successful”, he said.
On the P&ID $9.9billion judgement debt, Magu said the investigation had commenced.

“We are investigating. It’s ongoing. It will be revealing because some people want to rob this nation and we will not allow that”, he said.

The head of the military counter-insurgency operations in the North-East (Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole), Olusegun Adeniyi has said that the military will now move against the finances of Boko Haram.

He said this would be done by restricting their fishing activities anywhere in the country.

Adeniyi said this while addressing journalists in Maiduguri on Friday regarding vehicles, fish, hides, and skin, seized from transporters believed to have been trading with the Boko Haram insurgents.

Adeniyi revealed that four vehicles conveying insurgents’ fishery products were seized on Maiduguri-Ngala Road by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

According to him, the military has not moved out of Borno State but changed its strategies to prevent attacks on its base.

He added that troops had vacated the trenches and reduced the roadblocks and in its stead, evolved mobile units where the troops rove troubled areas.

He said the military found out that the stationed formation made it easy for the insurgents to attack military facilities but with the latest strategy, he pointed out, the insurgents would be in for a surprise.

He said: “Boko Haram insurgents have a running business to generate money to fund their dastardly activities. We fully recognize the fishery industry in Nigeria but the fishery done by Boko Haram is to create confusion, continue insurgency and destruction of the North-East.

“Anybody who allows his horse or camel to carry fish for the Boko Haram, you are part of the insurgents because you are aiding them.”
