The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has said that in less than two months, Nigeria would emerge the capital city of open defecation in the world with over 47 million still practising open defecation in the country.

This was made known by the UNICEF, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, specialist, Mr Bioye Ogunjobi on Wednesday at a Media dialogue on sanitation in Makurdi, the Benue state capital.

Ogunjobi explained that India which at the moment held that position, would quit it for Nigeria in October when open defecation would be outlawed in that country.

He said,

“By October 1, 2019, India which at present occupies that position will ban open defecation and Nigeria which currently occupies the second position will take over from India as the number one open defecation country.”

In her presentation, the Chief Scientific Officer, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs Yemi Akpa stated that the Federal government had approved the sum of N10billion to fight the menace across the country in 2019.

Speaking on the topic ‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign – the Journey so far’ Mrs Akpa said it was expected that the federal government would release the said sum annually till the year 2025 when it was elected that the country would be free from the practice.

“This will sustain the campaign against the practice and for the campaign to be successful in Nigeria everyone must be involved.

“If India can take over 550 million people out of open defecation in four years, Nigeria can also take 47 million people out of it between now and 2025,”

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has created mixed reactions amongst christian faithfuls by saying that it is wrongful to take the holy communion in the morning.

Almost all churches in Nigeria and all over the world take the Lord Supper (Holy Communion) during service time in the day.

But Adeboye said whenever he attended other churches, he always desisted from taking the Lord’s Supper because it is wrong.

Speaking at the Holy Communion service at the just-concluded 67th convention of the church at the new auditorium at the Redemption Camp, Adeboye, who preached on the importance of the Holy Communion in line with the theme of the convention which is “And God Said,” pointed out that “the first time the Passover was taken in the Bible, it was taken in the night on the eve of the Israelites freedom from Egypt. Jesus also took it in the night with his disciples.”

According to him, whenever he is invited to some churches and they were serving Holy Communion in the day, he would decline taking by simply stating: “I am fasting.”

Adeboye posited that taking of the Holy Communion at night is symbolic, adding that “Tears may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning. The night period is symbolic. It means the end of sorrow. It means the end of suffering. It means the end of stagnation. The supper is taken in the night and not in the day.”

He explained further the Holy Communion is a serious matter and should not be taken unworthily.

“Many are eating it unworthily that is why they are experiencing so many things they should not experience. You can’t come to the Lord’s Table and bear grudges and harbor hatred in your heart against your brother or sister. You will be doing yourself a great harm,”

The Department of State Services and the London Metropolitan Police Service have been petitioned to investigate the documents said to have been obtained from Cambridge University and presented by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential election petition tribunal.

According to TheCable, it said that it obtained copies of the separate petitions dated August 14, 2019, which were forwarded by Kalu Kalu Agu, a Nigerian lawyer.

Abba Kyari, the president’s chief of staff, had told the tribunal that he obtained the President’s ‘assessment’ documents from Cambridge University.

He was quoted as saying he personally signed for and collected the documents on behalf of the President.

The UK-based examination body oversaw the conduct of final year secondary school examination in Nigeria and placement into foreign universities in the 1960s.

In the two petitions forwarded by Agu, the lawyer questioned the authenticity of the ‘certifying statement’ said to have been obtained from the Cambridge Assessment International Education.

He asked the UK police and the DSS to launch an investigation into the circumstances leading to the procurement.
