The Department of State Services has denied an allegation making rounds that five of its personnel allegedly aided Mr. Nnamdi Kanu to escape from Nigeria.
Kanu , leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra , escaped from his abode in Umuahia , Abia State on September 14, 2017 .
He, however, resurfaced in Jerusalem, Israel on Friday.
Before his sudden disappearance, Kanu was being tried by the Federal Government for treason, but was granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja .
Spokesperson for the DSS , Mr. Peter Afunanya , in a statement in Abuja on Monday , described the rumour alleging that operatives of the agency helped Kanu to escape as “ malicious.”
In his words:
“The Service wishes to state that the news is fake , mischievous and defamatory . It is nothing but a figment of the imagination of the originators .
“The public should , by now , have noted the antics of Kanu , IPOB and their collaborators whose stock in trade is to peddle unfounded rumours , gossips and propaganda aimed at subverting the government , its key agencies and officials .
“The DSS is aware that some unscrupulous elements are keen on exploiting the situation to constitute a nuisance to the freedoms of all persons as guaranteed in the Constitution and as well disrupt the forthcoming general elections.
“The DSS will not stand by idly and watch these undesirable elements achieve their aims.
“It is to be further emphasised that the indissolubility, unity and indivisibility of our beloved country is sacred . ”
Afunanya called on those he described as “ obstructive planners against the unity of Nigeria ” to know that no individual or group can be bigger than this country.
He, therefore, reassured residents about their safety and the DSS ’ s commitment to providing an enabling environment for peace and stability in the country.
“We Won’t Stop Attack On Igbo Leaders Until They All Pay Dearly For Their Sins” – Nnamdi Kanu Threatens
Nnamdi Kanu has threatened that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) will continue attacking Igbo leaders in foreign countries.
Alleging that soldiers desecrated the Igbo tradition and culture by invading his father’s palace in Umuahia, the IPOB leader also blamed the death of over 600 IPOB members on ‘Operation Python Dance’ which he claimed was instigated and financed by Igbo leaders.
In the press statement titled “Setting the Records Straight…..” which was issued on Tuesday by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful, IPOB warned that they won’t stop until all Igbo leaders pay dearly for their sins.
The statement partly read, “These men instigated, financed and defended a full-scale bloody military invasion of Biafraland; they tagged Operation Python Dance that led to the torture and untimely death of over 600 Biafrans, 28 of which fell in my compound.
“These men sanctioned the desecration of the home of an Igbo tradition ruler by Fulani soldiers and did not care if my father HRM Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and my mother, who were home with me during the unprovoked invasion, is killed or not.
“In view of the Nuremberg encounter, it has become necessary for us to refresh our memories lest it succumbs to confusion and deliberate misinformation because most people, unlike we IPOB, are in the habit of excusing intolerable evil and wickedness but we not.
“Every perpetrator of evil, every purveyor of iniquity, every merchant of misery and every defender of injustice must and will be held to account.
We will not relent until justice is served.“Those with a conscience can now understand the root cause of our anger and why we won’t stop until they all pay dearly for their sins.”
“We Will Convert 5 Forests In Kano To Herdsmen Settlements”– Governor Ganduje Reveals
Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has revealed its plans to convert five forests in kano to grazing reserves for herdsmen.
Ganduje said that his administration had inaugurated a technical committee on farm settlements for herdsmen in the state. He said further that the proposed settlement would assist in boosting socio-economic ventures in the state.
He noted that the settlement was also to discourage the movement of herders from north to south to address herders/farmers crisis.
“We will provide social amenities such as hospital, veterinary clinic, market, security post and schools so that herdsmen will enjoy facilities just like other Nigerians,” Ganduje said.
According to him, herders settlement should not be a national issue, it should be a state issue because they live and flourish in every state.
He said that his administration would redouble efforts to ensure that farmers enjoy more intervention programs and projects to boost agriculture in the state.
Boko Haram Crisis Could Last For More Than 15 Years – Obasanjo Reveals
Former Nigeria’s President, Olusegun Obasanjo has on Tuesday August 20, raised an alarm that the Boko Haram crisis could last for more than 15 years if the educational sector is ignored.
He said this while speaking at a youth programme organised by the Youth Development Centre (an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library) in Abeokuta, the former President expressed fear about Nigeria’s population explosion which will be 450 million in the next 30 years.
He stated that the increased number of children out of school, contributed to insurgency witnessed in the north-east region.
“There should be no Nigerian child that should be out of school for any reason.
“You have already got your Boko Haram in the next 15 years if you don’t do anything about that. So, whatever you are talking about, unless you take care of inclusivity, you will not get there. Quality is important, but inclusivity is much better”
Obasanjo also recounted how he and the late Gen Murtala Muhammed turned around the country’s fortunes after the1970 civil war, while telling Nigerian youths not to lose hope despite the challenges facing the country.
“Having run the affairs of Nigeria as a military Head of State when some people felt there was virtually no hope, we turned it around.”
“I have tremendous hope in Nigeria; I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria.
“During the Murtala Muhammed government and my government soldiers who were working in Lagos and who had to go to office in public transport did not wear their uniforms, they were ashamed. But within the space of six months, they were proudly wearing their uniforms. So, it can be done.
“Don’t lose hope. The current situation is bad. I don’t need to tell you that, but I can see the light beyond the tunnel. There is light beyond the tunnel.”
