Weekend Celebrity Scan focus on Yung6ix is a prolific young Nigerian rapper whose hip-hop music genre has elevated him to the top notch of his career. He goes by the name Onome Onokohwomo but popularly known by his stage name as Yung6ix Aka King of the south AKA 6ix. Yung6ix was born on the 8th of July 1989 in Warri, Delta state. Music has always been an epicenter of this superstar’s life because it started way back in his secondary school days at FGC Warri where he usually engages himself in a rap battle with his fellow rap students. Along the line he formed a hip hop group known as ‘G- squad’. The group gained prominence and started performing at talent shows in Delta state.
After graduating from secondary school, Yung6ix decided to take his musical career to the next level by relocating to Lagos state, the entertainment hub of Nigeria. The talented rapper kept working hard, recording songs until one of his songs titled “I’m an African” captured the attention of A&R Gbemi Ereku, who then signed him to his 411 Entertainment company in 2009.
In 2010 his cover version of “oleku” went viral on the internet thereby given him lots of media attention. In same year, he released “So far Gone”, featuring P.Fizzy, a single off his Green Light Green mixtape. The song was a freestyle to Wiz Khalifa’s “This Plane”.
Yung6ix went ahead to release another single on January 2011, titled “Plenty Money”, which was also another track from the mixtape “Green Light Green.”
On September 2011, Yung6ix released the fourth track from the mixtape titled “Oh My Gosh”, the song earned him the “Lyricist on the Roll” and “Best Rap Single” nominations at the Headies Awards of the following year.
On December 26, 2011, ‘Green Light Green’ was released. In January 2012, the music video for “Oh my Gosh” was released. It was directed by Bobby Boulders. Shot in Lagos and Johannesburg, South Africa.
May 2012, Yung6ix released the second single from his debut album titled “Picking things“. He featured Naeto C, his defunct label mate and E Kelly.
At the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, 6ix received a nomination for the “Most Promising Act” but lost to Eva Alordiah who bagged the Award.
Yung6ix went ahead to collaborate with Percy to release his album’s third single titled “First Class“, which he released a music video for and the song earned him the “Best Hip Hop video” nomination at the 2013 Nigerian Music Video Awards.
On 6 February 2014 Yung6ix released his debut studio album titled, ‘6ix 0 clock’. A 16track album that had guest artist like Phyno, Percy, Da L.E.S, M.I. Ice Prince, Yemi Alade, Wizkid and YQ.
The rapper has been featured on so many hit songs like Wizkid’s follow me go and M.I’s Illegal Music 2. He has continued to churn out hits upon hits.
