Our weekend Celebrity Scan is a Nigerian Disc Jockey (DJ), record producer and Afro singer whose unique style of mixing sounds has reserved a spot for her in the Nigerian music industry. She goes by the name Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola but popularly known by her stage name as DJ Cuppy. She was born on November 11,1992 in Lagos state, Nigeria into the family of chief Femi Otedola, a Nigerian billionaire businessman and oil magnate. She lived in Ilupeju for six years before moving to Ikeja, from Ikeja she moved to London for her GCSE and A- Levels.
in July 2014, DJ cuppy graduated from King’s college London with a degree in business and economics. in 2015 she earned a master’s degree in Music Business from New York University, U.S.A.
Cuppy began her professional Disc Jockey career in 2014 at the MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban which she was the resident DJ. She also played at the Tatler and Christie’s Art Ball in London, and at the Financial Times Luxury Summit in Mexico City.
In July 2014, she dropped her first compilation mix in London and Lagos, before launching it in New York on September 2, 2014. She also launched the London based music management and content production business, named Red Velvet Music Group, all in the same year.
January 2015, The Guardian Life Magazine featured her on their cover page. The cover celebrated a new generation of African woman. Cuppy was named the official DJ for the 2015 Oil Barons Charity in Dubai, which also made her the first act to perform at the event, that same year, Issues of Forbes Woman Africa featured her.
Relentless DJ Cuppy had to set off on her first DJ tour to 8 cities in Africa, A tour she titled “Cuppy Takes Africa” on August 2015. The tour got her visiting countries like: Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Rwanda and Uganda. The tour had major artist collabos, and charitable engagements proudly supported by GTBank and Dangote Foundation. Later in same year, she interned at Jay-Z’s ROC Nation.
Cuppy was made the resident DJ for the 2016 MTV2 Uncommon Sense with Charmlamagne Tha God.
On March 24, 2017, she produced two songs titled “Vibe” and “The way I am”, which appeared on the ” Afrobeats” EP by Young Paris.
In October, 2017, the superstar released “Green Light”, which was her debut official single. The song features guest vocals from Nigerian Singer Tekno
Her second single was released on March 30, 2018 titled ” Vybe” featuring Ghanaian Rapper Sarkodie.
DJ Cuppy is currently Pepsi’s brand ambassador, she was among the #NaijaAllTheWay” all star commercial alongside other celebrities, a commercial shot for the 2018 FIFA World cup that took place in Russia. The talented DJ has won several awards in Nigeria and in the diaspora.
