Our weekend celebrity scan is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter whose unique igbo rap and hip hop style of music has carved a niche for him in the Nigerian Music Industry. He goes by the name Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike but popularly known by his stage name as Phyno. He was born on the 9th of October 1986 in Enugu state, Nigeria but hails from Anambra state. Phyno attended Nike Boys Secondary School for his secondary education, upon graduation he got admission to study Public Administration at the institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu. His musical career could be traced back to his secondary school days when he learned to play the drums and piano and can also create his own rendition of any recording he comes across. Because of his ability to freestyle, one of his friends named Emeka nicknamed him ‘Phenomenal’ which he later shortened to ‘Phyno’. The super star initially wanted to become a pilot, but was later told that he could be a doctor, before music came and swept him off his feet during his second year at IMT when he started profiting from music. He launched into music professionally as a producer in 2003. He produced for so many big names in the music industry before he started recording his own debut studio album titled ‘No Guts No Glory’ in the year 2012.
The album had notable guest artists featured in it like Olamide, Efa, Omawumi, Timaya, Flavour, Runtown and a host of others. On the 25th of September 2012, the lead single of the album titled “Ghost Mode” featuring Olamide was released to the delight of fans who really embraced the song as a street banger. The song garnered so much attention on Phyno. It won Best Collaboration at both the 2012 Headies Awards and 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
On March 23rd 2013, the album’s second single titled “Man of the year (obago),” was released. The song was produced by Phyno himself and won the Best Rap single category at the Headies Awards.
On 11th October 2013, the album’s third single titled “Parcel” was released which was also a big hit. The video was shot by Clarence Peters and was released on February 19, 2014.
The album’s fourth single was released titled “O Set”. The song was produced by Wizzy Pro and features defunct music duo Psquare. The video was directed by Jude Engees Okoye.
On March 20, 2014 Phyno released the ‘No Guts No Glory’ album under the record label of Sputnet/Penthauze Music. On the 22nd of May 2014 he shot the video for “Alobam” which was a hit track in the album .The video was directed by Clarence Peters. The title of the song “Alobam” is Phyno’s coined Igbo slang for my “Guy”.
After recording massive success for his first album which launched him into limelight, Phyno decided to collaborate with fellow rapper Olamide to come up with another album titled ‘2 kings’. The collaborative album was released on April 1, 2015.
On November 1, 2016, the prolific rapper released another album titled ‘The playmaker’. The 20- track album had guest artists like Onyeka Owenu, 2Baba, Psquare, Burna Boy, Olamide Flavour, MI etc. The album had so many hit singles like ” Fada Fada”, “Pino Pino”, ” E Sure for Me” and “Abulo”.
Phyno had continued to churn out hits upon hits and has won so many awards in and outside Nigeria. He has toured the world with so many big names in the music industry.
