Our weekend celebrity scan is a Nigerian born Afro- hip hop, ragga and dancehall artist. His Afro beat and soca sound has paved way for him in the Nigerian Music Industry. He goes by the name Enitimi Alfred Odom but popularly known by his stage name as Timaya, AKA Dem mama soldier AKA Egberi papa 1 of Bayelsa AKA Don papi chulo. He was born on the 15th of August 1980 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria but hails from Odi, Bayelsa state. He grew up in a very large family, the youngest of fifteen children in Agip Estate, in Port Harcourt. His father was a banker and his mother was a trader who he helps to hawk plantain in the streets of port harcourt. Timaya attended Assemblies of God Nursery and primary school before moving to Nkpolu Oroworukwo in Port harcourt for his secondary education. Timaya’s love for music was so deep as he usually breaks his family’s house rules to attend late- night music events. Before he could graduate from secondary school, his mum arranged for him to travel to Lagos to continue his secondary education. When he got to Lagos, he gained admission into Lagos Ikeja Grammar school where he graduated from.
He later gained admission to study Banking and Finance at the University of Port harcourt to become a banker just like his father. Due to poor grades, Timaya dropped out of school after first semester. He decided to run back to his first ‘love’ which is music by moving back to Lagos to join Eedris Abdulkareem’s hip hop group as a back up singer. He spent three years as a backup singer for the group before departing to focus solely on his solo career. He started recording collabos with other artists and made his debut musical appearance in an unreleased music video by UDX, a rap group based in Lagos.
Along the line, he met K-Solo in Mafoluku Oshodi, who produced his banger hit, titled “Dem Mama”. The satirical song became an anthem in virtually every household. On seeing the success the song gave to him, Timaya decided to continue with producer K-Solo. He went ahead to record seven more songs with the producer for his first album ‘True Story’, which he released in year 2007. In same year, Timaya began working on his second album with producers like: Akeem D Beat, K-Solo, Terry G, Phyno, Jeggs and Spankie. The second album was released in 2008 titled ‘Gift and Grace’. The album fetched him quite a number of awards which include: ” Album of the Year” at the Nigeria Music Awards of 2008, “Best Reggae/Dancehall Album” and “Best Collaboration” for his collaboration with J Martins in one of the tracks titled “Good or Bad” at the 2009 Headies Awards.
in the year 2010 Timaya released his third album titled, ‘De Ribirth’ which was produced by eight producers namely: Jay Sleek, Phyno, Akeem D Beat, Flux, M- Yire, Jesse Jagz, N.D and K- Solo. In this album he featured artists like: 2Baba, TJ2Solo, Allenian, Lanre, Konga, M.I, Wrecoba and T.J.
Timaya went further to release another collaborative album with Dem Mama soldiers titled LLNP (Long Life and Prosperity) on November 2011. The second track in the album featured the legendary and late reggae artist Ras Kimono. A 14- track album was released by the singer on the 25th of June 2012, which he titled ‘upgrade‘. The album contained so many hit tracks like: “Bum Bum”, “Sexy Ladies” and “Malonogede”.
The talented singer has continued to churn out hits upon hits and has won several awards in Nigeria and in the diaspora
