FG orders for an immediate overhaul of SARS

Nigeria’s Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to overhaul the activities of the Police Unit of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) with an immediate effect after so many months of complaints and signing of petition to end SARS activities following their brutality on citizens from the squad ranging from allegations of human rights violations. The government decided to overhaul the squad to end the persistent outcry on the street.
In a press release signed by Osinbajo’s Media Assistant, Laolu Akande, he ordered the IGP to ensure that any unit that emerges after SARS should be intelligence driven, restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery, kidnapping, apprehension of offenders end to the stated offences and nothing more.
The statement reads:“Following persistent complaints and reports on the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that border on allegations of human rights violations, His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN, Acting-President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, has directed the Inspector General of Police to, with immediate effect, overhaul the management and activities of SARS and ensure that any unit that will emerge from the process, will be intelligence-driven and restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery and kidnapping, and apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences, and nothing more”.
