This weekend’s celebrity scan is a Nigerian born Afro-pop and RnB singer, songwriter, vocalist and record producer who has used her soft tiny voice to capture the hearts of music lovers all over the world. She goes by the name Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye but popularly known by her stage name as Simi. The talented singer was born on April 19,1988 in Ojuluegba, Surulere, Lagos. She grew up with her mum following her parents separation. She hails from Ondo state, Nigeria. She attended stars International College in Ikorodu, Lagos state for her secondary education before she moved to Covenant University for her tertiary education where she studied Mass Communication.
Her Music career could be traced back to her childhood while she was a member of a local church choir where she always sings and dance. At the age of 10 she started writing her own songs but went professional in 2008 when she released her debut album titled “ogaju”. The album contained songs like ” Iya Temi” and “Ara Ile” and was produced by Samklef. On January 2014, the singer released an EP which she titled “Restless”. The song helped her to secure a recording deal with X3M Music. The 5 -track EP contains songs like cover of popular songs by International acts like Rihanna’s ” Man Down” and Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” etc.
After the release of the EP, Simi went on to release two singles titled “Tiff” and “E no go funny” which were hits. The video of “Tiff” was released on August 30,2015 and directed by Josh Clarke. The song was nominated in the “Best Alternative Song” category at the 2015 edition of the headies.
In 2015, Simi won the “Most Promising Act to Watch” category award at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Simi went on to release another hit single titled “Jamb Question” which she later remixed with Falz in 2016.
on February 14, 2016, Simi released another single titled “Love don’t care” which was a hit banger. The song is a ballad song which condemns the discrimination of love because of tribal social prejudices.
On October 2016, she was nominated in the “Best Breakthrough Act” category at the 2016 edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards. On October of same year, Simi collaborated with Falz to drop Chemistry EP.
On October 2016, Simi was nominated in three categories at the headies of 2016 where she won in one category.
On September 8, 2017 Simi released her second studio album titled ‘Simisola’ under the record label of X3M Music. The 12 track album features Adekunle Gold. The album came with hit tracks like “Joromi” and “Smile” which went on to debut at number five on Billboard World Albums Chart. The singer has continued to churn out hits upon hits upon hits. Winning awards both locally and Internationally.
It is correct to call the super star a sound engineer because she is credited to have mixed and mastered Adekunle Gold’s album which was released on July 2016.
